To design a ceramic-based lamp for a Leeds-based interior design company
This project was an industry lead brief in my second year. Throughout the project, I worked with James Dowsing-Reynolds, CEO of D&R, alongside Dan Cooper, CEO of Pararascal ltd. The brief was to create a 'rebellious' lamp, with elements of the 80's threaded throughout the design process. I chose to tackle this by taking influence from political design of the time.
Following discussions with James Dowsing-Reynolds, I followed on with a tall stemmed design, with the base being made from a ceramic that had some industrial heritage. Initially, this was cement, but manufacturing capabilities at Dowsing and Reynolds weren't fit for this. They had previously experimented with cement components in the past, but the consistency of the output was poor.
Following further development and experimentation, I settled on a porcelain base, inspired by the Leeds ceramics industry that got privatised by Thatcher after being bought under public control in the 70's. This was to be paired with a copper pipe as the stem, which feeds into a lamp holder that Dowsing and Reynolds produce in house. The shade was to be made of cotton, in reference to the textiles industry which centred on Leeds.
Test render, with simulated lighting. The shade material wasn't translucent enough to accurately simulate how the light would travel through it, and the bulb itself was given luminosity instead of the filament within.
Following further development, I created this in situ render using Adobe Dimension. This was to give the product scale for my final crit witrh James and Dan. As intended, I was able to demonstrate the lamp in an accurate environment.
